What it is
This is the 2023 pin from the Black Hills National Forest Moon Walk program. Each season has its own design, and 2023 is the bald eagle year. The pin is a tangible record of the 2023 walk season for anyone who attended, and a standalone collectible for anyone building the set across years.
About the design
The 2023 art shows a bald eagle with its wings fully spread, lit against a pale full moon, with a line of evergreens below and the “Black Hills Moon Walk” name across the bottom in a gold banner. The eagle and moon are picked out in black, white, and gold enamel.
About the Moon Walk program
The Moon Walk program has run in the Black Hills National Forest every summer since 1996. On Saturday evenings near the full moon, June through September, rangers and naturalists lead one-mile round-trip hikes to sites across the forest, from fire lookout towers to old mining towns to beaver ponds and cave entrances. The walks are free, family-oriented, and require no registration. More than 16,000 visitors have attended across roughly 160 events since the program began.
