What is the Smokey Bear standing keychain?
This is an officially licensed Smokey Bear keychain shaped like a small 3D figure of the standing Smokey statue. Smokey is wearing his flat-brim ranger hat and blue dungarees, holding a shovel in one hand. The figure is approximately 2.75 inches tall and clips to a standard 1-inch metal key ring. Total weight is 2 oz.
The pose is the one most people recognize: Smokey upright, looking at the viewer, ready to talk about preventing wildfires. It is a small version of the same Smokey statue that stands at Forest Service visitor centers and ranger stations across the country, including the Black Hills National Forest district offices.
About Smokey Bear
Smokey Bear was introduced on August 9, 1944, as the mascot of a wildfire prevention campaign run by the USDA Forest Service, the Ad Council, and the National Association of State Foresters. The campaign became the longest-running public service announcement in U.S. history.
The original slogan was “Remember… only YOU can prevent forest fires.” In April 2001 it was updated to “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,” reflecting the fact that grass fires, brush fires, and other wildland fires outside of forests are just as preventable. Roughly 9 out of 10 wildfires are human-caused.
Smokey’s image is a Congressional trademark, protected by federal law (the Smokey Bear Act of 1952). The Forest Service issues licenses to manufacturers, and royalties from licensed products go back to the Forest Service to fund Smokey’s public education work. Buying an officially licensed product is how the campaign keeps going.
One thing worth knowing: it is “Smokey Bear,” not “Smokey the Bear.” The confusion comes from a 1952 song by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins that added “the” to fit the rhythm. The Forest Service, the Ad Council, and all official licensing use “Smokey Bear.”
