Description
Smokey Bear ceramic mug, forest and wood-grain design
A 12 oz ceramic mug produced by Impact Photographics under the USDA Forest Service Smokey Bear license. The artwork wraps all the way around. On top, a forest scene with pines. On the bottom, a printed wood-grain band. Smokey is on the front in his ranger hat, with his line: Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.
This is the same Smokey you grew up with. The campaign is on its 82nd year as of 2026, which makes it the longest-running public service campaign in US history. It started in 1944, and the living black bear cub who later became the mascot was rescued from a 1950 wildfire in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico. Smokey is still a federal trademark, administered by the USDA Forest Service.
Impact Photographics is a souvenir manufacturer based in Petaluma, California. They make a lot of the sublimated mugs, stickers, and tins you see in national-park stores across the country. The sublimation process prints the artwork directly into the ceramic glaze, so it does not peel and does not fade like a printed decal would.

Who is this for?
Visitors to the Black Hills National Forest. Smokey is the mascot of the USDA Forest Service, and the BHNF is one of the oldest national forests in the country (established 1897). A Smokey mug on the kitchen counter is a small way to carry the trip home.
Firefighters, wildland crews, and USFS / NPS employees. There is a long tradition of gifting Smokey items among folks who work fire. If you know someone on a hotshot crew, a smokejumper team, or a ranger station, this is an easy one.
Anyone who remembers the campaign. If you grew up watching Smokey on TV in the 1970s, 80s, or 90s, this is that same bear, same hat, same line. It holds about one cup of coffee. That is what it is for.
Frequently asked questions
Is this mug dishwasher safe?
Top-rack dishwasher safe and microwave safe. The artwork is sublimated into the glaze, which is why it survives the dishwasher better than a printed decal would. If you want to be gentle with it over the long run, hand washing will keep the colors brightest.
How big is it?
12 oz capacity. About 3 3/4 inches tall with a 3 1/4 inch rim diameter. Empty weight is 11.8 oz. A standard coffee or tea size.
Is this officially licensed Smokey Bear?
Yes. Smokey Bear is a USDA Forest Service trademark. This mug is produced under that licensing program by Impact Photographics. If you are buying Smokey merchandise anywhere, it is worth checking that the product is licensed, because unlicensed Smokey items are common on general-marketplace sites.
What does the artwork actually look like?
The design wraps all the way around the mug. The upper band is a forest scene with pine trees. The lower band is a printed wood-grain texture. Smokey Bear in his ranger hat is on the front, with the Only You Can Prevent Wildfires slogan. Full color, no cropping, one piece of continuous art.
Who makes it?
Impact Photographics, based in Petaluma, California. Impact is one of the largest national-parks souvenir wholesalers and produces sublimated drinkware, stickers, postcards, and collectibles for park stores across the country.
How old is the Smokey Bear campaign?
82 years old as of 2026. It launched in 1944. The campaign predates most living Americans’ wildfire memories and is the longest-running public service campaign in US history. The living cub who became the mascot was rescued from a 1950 fire in the Capitan Mountains and later lived at the National Zoo in Washington, DC.
