Description

What is the Smokey Bear benchmark keychain?

This is an officially licensed Smokey Bear keychain made by Impact Photographics. The fob is shaped like a surveyor’s benchmark disk, a round metal plate modeled on the brass discs the US Geological Survey has embedded in the ground across the country since the 1800s to mark precisely surveyed reference points. The USGS originals have geographic data stamped into them. This one has Smokey Bear.

The face of the disk shows Smokey in his flat-brim ranger hat with the message “Only YOU” on the front. The fob is approximately 1.5 inches in diameter and attaches to a standard 1-inch key ring. Total weight is listed at 1.5 oz.

Impact Photographics is based in El Dorado Hills, California, and is one of the USDA Forest Service’s official Smokey Bear licensees. Royalties from licensed Smokey Bear products go back to the Forest Service to fund wildfire prevention education.

About Smokey Bear

Smokey Bear was introduced on August 9, 1944, as the mascot of a wildfire prevention campaign run by the USDA Forest Service, the Ad Council, and the National Association of State Foresters. The campaign became the longest-running public service announcement in U.S. history.

The original slogan was “Remember… only YOU can prevent forest fires.” In April 2001 it was updated to “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,” reflecting the fact that grass fires, brush fires, and other wildland fires outside of forests are just as preventable. Nearly 9 out of 10 wildfires are human-caused.

Smokey’s image is a Congressional trademark, protected by federal law. The Forest Service issues licenses to manufacturers like Impact Photographics, and those royalties fund Smokey’s public education work. Buying an officially licensed product is how the campaign keeps going.

One thing worth knowing: it is “Smokey Bear,” not “Smokey the Bear.” The confusion comes from a 1952 song by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins that added “the” to fit the rhythm. The Forest Service, the Ad Council, and all official licensing use “Smokey Bear.”

Who is this for?

If you work outdoors, volunteer with the Forest Service, or just grew up hearing “Only YOU,” this is a straightforward way to carry that around. The benchmark shape is a nice detail for people who know what USGS survey markers look like: it’s not a standard oval or rectangle fob, it looks like the real thing.

It’s the kind of thing that works as a park store impulse buy, a stocking stuffer, or an add-on to a larger gift. It pairs well with other Smokey Bear items in the BHPFA store.

Smokey Bear collectors will want to note this is a different design from the Smokey Bear charms keychain (SKU 4707), which has three small resin-coated metal charms on a carabiner. This one is a single solid metal disk.

Frequently asked questions

What does “benchmark” mean in the product name?
A benchmark is a type of geodetic survey marker, a round metal disk the US Geological Survey sets in the ground to mark precisely measured reference points for mapping. The design of this keychain fob is modeled on that disk shape. It is a recognized collector form, and Impact Photographics makes benchmark-style keychains and medallions for parks and forests across the country.

What does the face of the keychain show?
Smokey Bear’s portrait in his flat-brim ranger hat, with the “Only YOU” message. The design is consistent with the official Smokey Bear fire prevention campaign imagery.

Is this an officially licensed Smokey Bear product?
Yes. Impact Photographics holds an official USDA Forest Service license for Smokey Bear products. The royalties from licensed products go to the Forest Service to fund wildfire prevention education programs.

What is the correct name: “Smokey Bear” or “Smokey the Bear”?
Smokey Bear, no middle name. A 1952 song added “the” to fit the melody. Official USDA Forest Service materials, the Ad Council, and all licensed products use “Smokey Bear.”

How big is it?
The fob disk is approximately 1.5 inches in diameter. The key ring is 1 inch. Total weight is approximately 1.5 oz (verify against physical product).

Why does BHPFA carry Smokey Bear products?
BHPFA operates stores at Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands, both managed by the USDA Forest Service. Smokey Bear is the Forest Service’s wildfire prevention mascot, so he is a natural fit for these stores.

Does buying this support national parks and forests?
Yes. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.

Is there a matching Smokey Bear charm keychain?
Yes. The Smokey Bear Charm Keychain (SKU 4707) has three resin-coated metal charms (Smokey’s head, Smokey with a shovel, and a pine tree) on a carabiner clip. It is a different design and price point. This benchmark keychain is a single solid metal disk fob.
