Description
Smokey Bear color-changing magic mug, 12 oz
A 12 oz ceramic mug produced by Impact Photographics under the USDA Forest Service Smokey Bear license. At room temperature the artwork shows a healthy green forest. Pour in hot coffee or tea and the thermochromic ink reacts to the heat. The green forest fades and a burned, post-wildfire landscape appears, with Smokey Bear and his line: Only You Can Prevent Wildfires. As the mug cools, the green forest returns.
It is a novelty mug with a point. The color change does the teaching without anyone having to say it out loud. Wildfires can turn a living forest into the second image in the time it takes to brew a pot of coffee. The mug works best as a daily-driver for someone who already cares about fire on the land, or as a gift for a kid or grandkid who will watch the change happen every morning.
Impact Photographics is a souvenir manufacturer based in Petaluma, California. They produce a lot of the mugs, stickers, postcards, and tins sold in national-park stores across the country.

Who is this for?
Visitors to the Black Hills National Forest. Smokey is the mascot of the USDA Forest Service, and the BHNF covers about 1.25 million acres across South Dakota and Wyoming. Fire risk is part of the life of the forest. This mug carries that conversation home.
Firefighters, wildland crews, and USFS or NPS employees. There is a long tradition of gifting Smokey items to folks who work fire. For crews, the burned-scene reveal will hit different than it does for civilians. That is not a bug.
Kids and grandkids. The color change is fun to watch and it teaches the point without a lecture. Add hot cocoa, watch the forest burn, watch it come back. Good starter coffee mug for someone old enough to be trusted with ceramic.
Frequently asked questions
Is this mug dishwasher safe?
No. Hand wash only. The thermochromic ink that makes the color change work does not survive dishwasher heat cycles. A dishwasher wash will either dull the effect or kill it entirely. Warm water, mild soap, soft sponge.
Can I microwave it?
No. The color-change coating is not microwave rated. Heat the coffee or tea in a kettle or a different mug, then pour in. That is also how you trigger the color change on purpose.
How does the color change work?
The mug is printed with thermochromic ink, which changes state at a specific temperature threshold. Below the threshold the ink shows one color. Above it, the ink turns transparent and reveals a second layer of artwork underneath. Hot coffee is plenty of heat to trigger it. As the liquid cools, the ink returns to its room-temperature color and the first scene reappears.
Will the color change wear off?
With hand-wash care, the effect holds up well across normal use. Dishwasher cycles, metal scrubbers, and bleach will shorten its life. Treat it like a favorite ceramic, not a work mug you throw in the break-room dishwasher.
How big is it?
12 oz capacity. About 3 3/4 inches tall with a 3 inch diameter. Empty weight is 11.8 oz. A standard coffee or tea size.
Is this officially licensed Smokey Bear?
Yes. Smokey Bear is a USDA Forest Service trademark. This mug is produced under that licensing program by Impact Photographics. Unlicensed Smokey merchandise is common on general-marketplace sites, so the licensed origin is worth knowing.
How old is the Smokey Bear campaign?
82 years old as of 2026. It launched in 1944. The campaign predates most living Americans’ wildfire memories and is the longest-running public service campaign in US history. The living cub who became the mascot was rescued from a 1950 fire in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico and later lived at the National Zoo in Washington, DC.
