A windmill is a structure used to harness the power of the wind for purposes like grinding grain, pumping water, and generating electricity. Most windmills found on farms, are called “windpumps”, which are used mostly for lifting water from wells. They are constructed with many blades, so they can turn slowly with considerable torque in low winds and are self-regulating in high winds. A 16-foot diameter wind pump can lift up to 1600 gallons of water per hour.
