What is Trivial Pursuit: National Parks Travel Edition?

This is the travel-sized version of Trivial Pursuit built around the United States National Park System. USAopoly released it to mark the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, and the 600 questions cover everything from the geologic features of individual parks to the legislative history of the NPS as a whole.

The game comes in a small hard-sided travel case about the size of a thick index card box. A carabiner on the case clips to a backpack, daypack, or belt loop, so it’s genuinely portable in a way that a full-sized board game is not. You can play around a campfire, at a picnic table, on a road trip, or on a long flat stretch of trail where conversation is actually possible.

USAopoly (now operating as The Op) has been making licensed trivia and strategy games since 1994 and produces National Park-themed editions of several titles. This edition is one of the most widely carried at cooperative association stores across the NPS.

How the game works

Players take turns rolling the custom die to land on one of six categories. Another player reads the corresponding question from the top card. Get it right, and you keep the card. First player to collect six cards wins. There is no board, no tokens, and no setup time beyond shuffling the cards. Games typically run 30 minutes or more depending on how many players are competing.

Who is this for?

If you’ve visited a lot of parks and feel reasonably confident about your NPS knowledge, this game will test you. The questions span geology, wildlife, history, legislation, and individual park facts, not just the obvious landmarks everyone already knows. It’s harder than it looks.

Is this a complete version of Trivial Pursuit or a simplified travel version?

It’s a complete, self-contained game, not a stripped-down version of a larger set. The 600 questions and six categories are the full game. What makes it a “travel edition” is the compact case and carabiner rather than a reduced question count.

How hard are the questions?

Recommended for ages 12 and up. The range is wide. Some questions are general enough that a first-time park visitor could answer them; others require specific knowledge of lesser-known parks, historical events, or scientific classifications. A mix of ages and park experience levels usually makes for the most interesting games.

Can you play with two people?

Yes. The rules support 2 or more players. With two players, games tend to move faster. You can also play in teams if you have a larger group.

Does this cover all 400+ national park units?

The questions draw from across the NPS: national parks, national monuments, national recreation areas, national battlefields, and other NPS designations. The game does not claim to cover every single unit, but the scope is broad. You will encounter questions about less-visited sites, not just the most famous parks.

Is the carabiner functional for climbing or load-bearing use?

No. The carabiner is a convenience clip for attaching the case to a bag or daypack. It is not rated for climbing, rappelling, or any load-bearing application.
