What it is
This is the Wind Cave National Park design in the historic oval sticker series printed by Impact Photographics, one of the largest souvenir manufacturers in the U.S. The illustration is an original vintage-style drawing, not a photograph, in the look of early-20th-century exploration art. It is sold at the Wind Cave visitor center store and through the BHPFA online shop.
About the design
The artwork shows early explorers picking their way through the underground passages of Wind Cave, framed by the oval banner reading “Wind Cave National Park, Est. 1903, South Dakota, U.S.A.” Wind Cave is best known for its boxwork: thin, honeycomb-patterned calcite fins that are rare worldwide and found in extraordinary density here.
About the site
Wind Cave National Park sits in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota and became the seventh national park in 1903, the first anywhere established to protect a cave. The cave below holds an estimated 95% of the world’s known boxwork. Above ground, the park protects mixed-grass prairie and a free-roaming bison herd descended from 14 animals transferred from the Bronx Zoo in 1913, one of the earliest bison restoration efforts in North America.
