Description
What Is the Passport to Your National Parks?
The Passport to Your National Parks is the #1 best-selling national park guidebook, published by Eastern National, a fellow official nonprofit education partner of the National Park Service alongside Black Hills Parks & Forests Association. First introduced in 1986, the Passport program has become one of the most beloved traditions among national park visitors, with collectors filling book after book over years and even decades of park visits.
The concept is simple: bring your Passport book to any national park visitor center or park store, and get a free ink cancellation stamp with the date and location of your visit. Over time, your Passport becomes a personalized record of every national park experience you’ve had.
The Classic Edition is the standard, most popular version in the Passport lineup. Compact enough to fit in a pocket or daypack, yet comprehensive enough to cover all 400+ units of the National Park System.

- Dedicated stamp pages with space for rubber-stamp cancellations from each park
- Commemorative stamp sections for the annual stamp series released each year
- A foldable pull-out map of the entire National Park System — an official NPS interpretive map
- Full-color illustrations and photographs throughout

Who Is This For?
First-time park visitors: The Passport is the perfect companion for your first national park trip. It gives you an overview of the entire park system and a tangible way to remember each visit. Start your collection at Scotts Bluff National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, or Jewel Cave National Monument. We have cancellation stamps at all of our partner parks.
Seasoned collectors: Many Passport owners are on their 3rd, 5th, or even 9th book. When yours fills up, pick up another Classic Edition or add an Expander Pack for additional stamp pages. The annual commemorative stamp sets add another layer of collecting.
Gift buyers: This is one of our most popular gift items. It’s an affordable gift that leads to years of national park adventures. Great for birthdays, holidays, graduation gifts, or as a trip-starter for someone planning a national parks road trip.
How the Passport Cancellation Stamp Program Works
New to passport stamping? Here’s how it works (we also have a full beginner’s guide to getting started):
- Get your Passport book from any national park visitor center, park store, or online (you’re in the right place).
- Visit a national park — any of the 400+ units in the National Park System.
- Find the cancellation stamp at the visitor center or park store. It’s usually near the front desk or information counter. Just ask a ranger if you don’t see it.
- Stamp your Passport — the cancellation records the park name and the date of your visit. It’s free, every time.
- Collect commemorative stamps — Eastern National releases a set of collectible stamps each year featuring specific parks. These are separate adhesive stamps you purchase and add to your book.
- Fill it up and start another — many collectors have multiple completed Passports spanning years of travel.
Each cancellation stamp is unique to the park and date, making every one a one-of-a-kind record of your visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a national parks passport cancellation stamp?
A cancellation stamp is a free rubber ink stamp available at national park visitor centers and park stores. Each stamp includes the park’s name and the date you visit. You press it into your Passport book to record your visit… similar to getting a passport stamped at international borders.
How many national parks have cancellation stamps?
Nearly all 400+ National Park Service units have at least one cancellation stamp. This includes national parks, monuments, historic sites, battlefields, seashores, lakeshores, and recreation areas.
What is the difference between cancellation stamps and commemorative stamps?
Cancellation stamps are free rubber ink stamps you press into your book at each park. Commemorative stamps are collectible adhesive stamps released annually by Eastern National that you purchase separately and add to designated spaces in your Passport. Both types have dedicated pages in the book.
What’s the difference between the Classic, Collector’s, Explorer, and Junior Ranger editions?
The Classic Edition ($14.95) is the standard, most portable version with 112 pages. The Collector’s Edition ($32.95) is a premium hardcover with more space. The Explorer Edition ($69.95) is the most comprehensive. The Junior Ranger Edition ($17.95) is designed specifically for kids with activities and simpler language.
What if my Passport book fills up?
You can purchase an Expander Pack to add more pages, or start a fresh Classic Edition. Many collectors are proud to be on their 3rd, 5th, or even 9th book.
Do all BHPFA park stores carry the cancellation stamps?
Yes! You can get your Passport stamped at our stores at Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Black Hills National Forest locations.
Does buying this support national parks?
Yes. 100% of net proceeds from the Passport program support national parks through Black Hills Parks & Forests Association and the non-profit publisher Eastern National Parks Association.
Can I buy the Passport book online and use it at any park?
Absolutely. Order it here, and it works at every National Park Service site in the country. The cancellation stamps are free at each park — the book is all you need to start collecting.
