Description
What is this keychain?
A metal spinner keychain with classic Smokey Bear artwork on the fob. Smokey is shown in his ranger hat with his shovel, next to the “Only You” wildfire prevention message that has been his tagline since 1944. The fob is attached to a split ring with a small swivel, so it spins freely when you pick up your keys.
Made by Impact Photographics, a Petaluma, California wholesaler that supplies park stores and souvenir shops across the country. The Smokey Bear artwork is used under the USDA Forest Service’s official licensing program, which is how BHPFA is allowed to carry Smokey merchandise at its Black Hills National Forest store.

Who is this for?
Black Hills National Forest visitors. If you hiked Black Elk Peak, fished at Pactola Reservoir, or camped anywhere in the 1.25 million acres of the Black Hills National Forest, a Smokey keychain is a small, durable reminder of the trip. It lives on your keys, not in a drawer.
Smokey Bear collectors. There’s a long tradition of collecting Smokey merchandise, from the 1950s plush figures to modern spinner fobs. This one uses the classic shovel-and-ranger-hat artwork that most collectors recognize.
Gift buyers. Low price, universal recognition, and light enough to mail cheaply. Works well for firefighters, forestry workers, state or federal land-management staff, and anyone who grew up hearing the “Only You” message.
About Smokey Bear
Smokey Bear is the fire-prevention mascot of the USDA Forest Service, created in 1944 by the Ad Council with the Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. His original tagline, “Smokey Says, Care Will Prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires,” was shortened over the years to the version most people know today: “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” (updated from “forest fires” in 2001 to cover grassland and rangeland fires too).
A real black bear cub found alive after the 1950 Capitan Gap fire in New Mexico became the living Smokey and lived at the National Zoo in Washington DC until 1976. The mascot continues in his role today and is one of the most recognized advertising characters in US history.
Frequently asked questions
Does the fob really spin?
Yes. The design is attached to the split ring by a small swivel. The fob rotates freely when you pick up the keys. It is a small, fidgety detail that some people love and some people don’t notice at all.
How big is it?
The fob is 2 3/4″ tall by 1″ wide, and the split ring is 1 1/4″ across. Total length from the bottom of the fob to the top of the ring is about 4″. It fits comfortably in a pocket alongside a normal set of car and house keys.
What’s on the design?
The classic Smokey Bear illustration: Smokey in his ranger hat, holding a shovel, with the “Only You” wildfire prevention tagline. Both sides of the fob carry artwork (the spinner design is meant to be seen from either side).
Who makes it?
Impact Photographics, based in Petaluma, California. They are one of the largest US national-park souvenir wholesalers and produce Smokey merchandise under the USDA Forest Service’s licensing program.
Is Smokey Bear a National Park Service character?
No. Smokey is a US Forest Service (USDA) character. The Forest Service manages national forests, including the Black Hills National Forest here in South Dakota and Wyoming. The National Park Service is a different agency (Department of the Interior) and manages national parks and monuments. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of both the Black Hills National Forest and four NPS sites in the region.
Can I get the Passport to Your National Parks cancellation stamp here?
Not with this keychain, and not at USFS sites. The Passport program is NPS-only. Black Hills National Forest, like all National Forests, is USFS and does not have a Passport cancellation stamp. For Passport stamps on a Black Hills trip, visit Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, or Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.
Does buying this support the forest?
Yes. Proceeds support the Black Hills National Forest and other BHPFA partner parks and forests. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.
Is there a BHPFA member discount?
Yes. Standard 15% member discount applies at checkout for current BHPFA members.
