What it is
This is the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument design in the Black Hills and Nebraska Panhandle collectible token series. Unlike the round tokens in the set, this one is rectangular. It is a struck-metal piece made for collecting and display.
About the design
The front carries “Agate Fossil Beds National Monument” above a Nebraska Panhandle landscape. The reverse is engraved with “Daemonelix,” the spiral-shaped fossil burrow, sometimes called the devil’s corkscrew, that helped make the site famous.
About the monument
Agate Fossil Beds protects one of the richest Miocene mammal fossil deposits in North America, set in the grasslands along the Niobrara River in the Nebraska Panhandle. The Daemonelix burrows preserved here puzzled scientists for years before being identified as the dens of an ancient land beaver.
How the tokens work
Each token carries the park or forest name on one side and a related image on the other. Collectors keep them in a token album with slotted pages, the same way pressed-penny and challenge-coin collections are stored. Tokens and albums are sold separately so you can build the set one site at a time.
