What is this hiking medallion?
An enameled metal medallion commemorating the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup, South Dakota’s largest annual wildlife event. The die-cut design centers on the American bison, with colored enamel on the front and a brushed metal finish on the reverse. Officially approved by Custer State Park.
Made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a family-owned manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee that has produced custom souvenirs for parks, trails, and historic sites across the country for decades. Three metal nails are included for mounting on a hiking stick or walking staff. The medallion is slightly flexible and can be curved to match a round staff, or flattened and glued to a flat surface.
About the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup
Custer State Park covers 71,000 acres in the southern Black Hills and is home to one of the largest publicly owned bison herds in the United States, around 1,300 head. The original herd was purchased in 1914 from Scotty Philip’s herd near Pierre. Each fall, park rangers and volunteer riders on horseback drive the herd across the prairie for health checks and population management. It’s one of the most-attended outdoor events in South Dakota, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each year.
Custer State Park is a South Dakota state park managed by the state’s Game, Fish and Parks department. It sits adjacent to Wind Cave National Park, one of BHPFA’s partner NPS sites. Visitors to the Black Hills often combine a stop at Custer State Park with Wind Cave or Jewel Cave.

How to attach it
Pre-drill three small holes in your walking stick where you want the medallion, then press the nails through the medallion holes and into the drilled holes. The medallion is slightly flexible and can be curved to match the round shape of a staff. To mount on a flat surface (bike frame, RV exterior, display board), flatten the medallion and use a strong adhesive.

Can I put it on something other than a hiking stick?
Yes. Bike frames, RV panels, display boards, scrapbooks. Flatten it slightly if you’re mounting to a non-round surface. Flatten fully for gluing to flat material.
Is this the same as the Custer State Park pin?
No. The hiking medallion is larger (1 3/4″ x 1 1/2″) and designed to nail onto a hiking stick or walking staff. The Custer State Park pin is a standard lapel/tack pin, about 1″ wide, worn on hats, jackets, or bags. Same park, different format.
Is Custer State Park a national park?
No. Custer State Park is a South Dakota state park managed by the state’s Game, Fish and Parks department. It borders Wind Cave National Park, which is an NPS site and one of BHPFA’s partner parks. BHPFA sells Custer State Park merchandise because of the park’s proximity and the shared visitor base in the Black Hills.
What is the Buffalo Roundup?
The annual fall event when Custer State Park rangers and volunteer riders on horseback gather the entire bison herd (around 1,300 animals) across the open prairie for health inspections, vaccinations, and population management. It typically happens in late September. The event is free to watch and draws some of the largest crowds of any outdoor event in South Dakota.
