Learn to read the landscape of western Nebraska. Park Ranger Christian Hedrick presents “Ethnobotany of the High Plains,” an evening program on the native plants of the High Plains and how people have identified, used, and ethically harvested some of the region’s greatest natural treasures.

The program begins inside the Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center Theater with a presentation on High Plains edible plants, native plant ethnobotany, and foraging ethics. Ranger Hedrick then leads a short walk on the Oregon Trail Pathway to identify several of these species in person, including pincushion cactus and chokecherry.

Free and open to all. Bring water and comfortable walking shoes for the outdoor portion.
