What is this hiking medallion?
A small oval medallion showing the South Dakota state flag and the US flag side by side, with “SOUTH DAKOTA” and “MOUNT RUSHMORE STATE” on the face. It’s enameled metal with gold-tone raised details and a brushed finish on the back. Made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a family-owned manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee, that has produced custom souvenirs for national and state parks for decades.
Hiking stick medallions like this one have been a tradition in Europe for a long time, and they have taken off in the US over the last couple of decades. The idea is simple: pick one up at each place you visit, nail it to your walking staff, and end up with a stick that shows where you’ve been. They’re one of the most affordable park souvenirs around.

How to attach it
Pre-drill three small holes in your walking stick first, then press the nails through the medallion and into the holes. The medallion can be gently bent to conform to the round shape of a staff. If you’re attaching to a flat surface like an RV panel, bike frame, or scrapbook, flatten it out and use strong adhesive instead.

What does the design show?

How big is it?

Wind Cave National Park (southern Black Hills, near Hot Springs), Jewel Cave National Monument (just west of Custer), and Scotts Bluff National Monument (western Nebraska, about 3.5 hours from the Black Hills) are BHPFA partner parks. Can I get it stamped in the Passport to Your National Parks program?
