Start your day with the sights and sounds of the prairie coming to life and explore the hidden treasures in Wind Cave National Park!
In this course, participants will learn about the fascinating ecological stories and processes that make Wind Cave National Park’s prairie ecosystem unique. Through hands-on exploration in the field, this course will cover a wide range of topics in ecology and the park’s history, and see how careful attention can bring new depth to your experience of the natural world.
We’ll begin with a van tour through Wind Cave National Park’s grasslands and forests, keeping an eye out for bison, elk, prairie dogs, badgers, and other wildlife. Along the way, we’ll explore the mixed-grass prairie—one of the most diverse and threatened ecosystems in North America.
Next, we’ll take a short hike (about 1 to 2 miles on easy terrain) to get a closer look at the plants, geology, and animals. Expect hands-on learning, opportunities for wildlife observation and photography, and stories that bring the prairie to life.
