What to Know:
Join BHPFA education specialist Tom Tonkin for a light hike while learning about “the language of nature” at Jewel Cave National Monument.
Learning the language of nature
Would you like to be able to tell if a hawk or coyote is nearby just by what the birds are saying to each other? In this adventure, you’ll learn to tune into the communication systems of wildlife and “read” the landscape through sound and animal behavior.
- Detect hidden predators and prey through the universal wildlife communication system
- Recognize alarm calls, movement patterns, and behavior shifts
- Move quietly through nature and become nearly invisible
- Deepen your connection to nature by understanding the living voices
Includes a 1 to 2 mile hike on easy terrain at Jewel Cave National Monument.
Taught by Tom Tonkin, Education Specialist for Black Hills Parks and Forests Association.
