What to Know:
Celebrate National Trails Day with a guided afternoon hike into Hell Canyon, one of the quieter limestone canyons in the southern Black Hills. A Black Hills National Forest guide leads the way with stops for geology, cultural history, and long canyon views.
The route follows the Hell Canyon Trail, a roughly 5.3-mile loop rated easy to moderate. Plan for about three hours on the trail, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Bring water, sturdy shoes, sun protection, and a snack, and dress for the weather.
Getting there: meet at the Hell Canyon Trailhead on US Highway 16, about 11 miles west of Custer. The hike is free and open to all. #RecreateResponsibly
