What to Know:
Throw a spear the way hunters did for thousands of years. Join a Nebraska National Forest ranger at the Pinnacles for a hands-on look at the atlatl, an ancient spear-throwing tool that came long before the bow and arrow, then step up and launch one yourself.
The program covers how the atlatl worked, why it mattered for survival on the grasslands, and the skill it took to hunt with one. After the talk you will have a chance to throw an atlatl.
Getting there: The Pinnacles Dispersed Camping Area is about 7 miles south of Wall, SD off Highway 240, near the communication towers at the intersection of Forest System Road (FSR) 7170 and FSR 7158. GPS coordinates: 43.893234, -102.229143.
