Custer State Park’s bison herd
The Custer State Park bison herd has a remarkable history. Once on the brink of extinction, bison populations were decimated in the late 19th century due to extensive hunting. Hunters, U.S. troops, and tourists killed the bison by the thousands for commercial uses such as machinery, fertilizer, and clothing. This practice was also a strategic move to force Native American tribes off their lands and onto reservations by depriving them of a critical resource. By 1889, only a few hundred bison remained in North America.
The herd at Custer State Park began with 36 animals purchased in 1914. Today, the park is home to approximately 1,000 bison, a testament to successful conservation efforts. The park’s grasslands, shaped by seasonal snow and rain, sustain this thriving population, with about 400 calves born each year.
Carry a piece of Custer State Park with you on all your adventures and proudly display your support for our national parks and forests. Commemorate the legacy and resilience of the American Bison with this stunning hiking medallion.
