SUMMARY:Elk Bugling | Wind Cave
DESCRIPTION:Join park rangers at Wind Cave National Park for one of autumn’s most thrilling wildlife experiences. Bull elk bugle across the mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forests as the fall rut begins\, their eerie calls echoing through the hills at dusk. \nMeeting point: Wind Cave Visitor Center at 7:00 p.m. Rangers lead a caravan to a listening location selected for the best chances of hearing and seeing elk activity. Programs run approximately 75 minutes. \nAbout the elk bugling programs\nWind Cave National Park’s elk bugling programs run every Monday\, Wednesday\, and Saturday evening from mid-September through early October. The programs are free\, family-friendly\, and require no registration. Dress warmly in layers. Autumn evenings in the Black Hills can drop into the 40s. Bring binoculars if you have them. \nWind Cave National Park is home to one of the largest natural herds of elk in the region. The fall rut\, when bull elk compete for mates with dramatic bugling calls\, is one of the park’s premier wildlife-watching opportunities.

SUMMARY:Bird Walk and Talk | Wind Cave
DESCRIPTION:The forest around you is never silent. Every chirp\, alarm call\, and sudden hush carries information that birds\, deer\, and predators already know how to read. In this guided hike through Wind Cave National Park\, Education Specialist Tom Tonkin teaches you to do the same. \nYou will learn the difference between animals at baseline and alarm behavior\, and how to use what you hear to detect hidden wildlife\, track predator movement\, and read the living pulse of the landscape around you. \nThe deer already knows something is out there. So do the squirrels. So do the birds. This hike teaches you to know it\, too. \nAbout 1.5 miles on trail. Meet at 8:45 am at the Wind Cave Visitor Center. Come ready for a gentle hike and leave with a skill you will use for the rest of your life. \n$15 per person or $40 for a family of up to 4. BHPFA members save 15% at checkout.

SUMMARY:Theodore Roosevelt Impersonator Kurt Skinner | Wind Cave
DESCRIPTION:Colorado-based historian Kurt Skinner brings the country’s 26th president to life in a one-evening performance at the Elk Mountain Campground Amphitheater in Wind Cave National Park. A retired military officer-turned high school history teacher\, Skinner is a lifelong student of Roosevelt’s legacy and has performed as the president at national parks and historic sites across the country. \nIn his portrayals\, Skinner aims to honor and faithfully represent the man he admires\, engaging audiences of all ages with humor\, history and storytelling. His goal: to remind us\, in Roosevelt’s own words\, what has always been great about America. \nAlthough Roosevelt never visited Wind Cave\, he signed the legislation creating the park on January 9\, 1903. \nFree and open to all. The program begins at 7 p.m. at the Elk Mountain Campground Amphitheater. Sponsored by the Friends of Wind Cave National Park. For more information\, visit www.nps.gov/wica or contact the park at (605) 745-4600.

SUMMARY:Learning the Language of Nature | Wind Cave National Park
DESCRIPTION:“When anything moves through the wild\, the forest announces it. And once you learn the language\, you will realize how much was always there\, just out of sight.”Tom Tonkin\, BHPFA Education Specialist \nThe forest around you is never silent. It is speaking. Every chirp\, alarm call\, and sudden hush carries information that birds\, deer\, and predators already know how to read. In this guided hike through Wind Cave National Park\, Education Specialist Tom Tonkin will teach you to do the same. We meet at the Wind Cave Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m. \nYou will learn the difference between animals at baseline and animals in alarm\, and how to use what you hear to detect hidden wildlife\, track predator movement\, and read the living pulse of the landscape around you. \nThe deer already knows something is out there. So do the squirrels. So do the birds. This hike teaches you to know it\, too. \nThis is a skill\, not a lecture. You will practice it in real time\, on the trail\, in one of the best birding habitats in the Black Hills. \nCome ready to hike about 1.5 miles on uneven terrain\, and leave with an understanding you will use for the rest of your life. \nDetails: Spots are limited. 15 dollars per person\, or 40 dollars for a family of up to four. BHPFA members receive a 15 percent discount.
